What is Dance Marathon?
Dance Marathon is a UNL organization that raises money each year for Children's Hospital in Omaha. Dancers register throughout the fall semester, and then send in addresses of family and friends they like to ask to donate. Dance Marathon (DM) then takes care of sending letters to those potential donors and handling any donations
received. The fundraising process goes on until late February, when we hold the actual Dance Marathon event. The 12-hour celebration takes place in the Nebraska Union on UNL's city campus, and is a night filled with entertainment, including bands, break dancers, and families helped by the Hospital sharing their experiences. In its 3rd year, Dance Marathon raised over $54,000 from the 2006 event.
Dance Marathon 2008 is scheduled for February 22 and 23. More details on time and location will be posted in the near future. Registered dancers are reminded to pay their registration fee and submit addresses if they have not done so already. Dancer check-in begins at 5pm on Friday, and all dancers need to arrive to check in no later than 6:45pm. Dancers who check-in early can leave as long as they have returned to the Union by 6:45.
What Dance Marathon is not:
A common misconception is that Dance Marathon is a dance competition or contest. No dancing skills are necessary, and you don't even have to dance as long as you remain standing. Video games, card tables and ping-pong have been provided in the past to provide alternative activities to dancing.
